BLM Announces Special Adoption Event PDF Print E-mail
From BLM Nevada News

The BLM succeeded in adopting out forty animals; 30 wild hroses and ten burros at the adoption referenced below.  It wa a huge success and congratulations are in order for all those that helped out finding new homes for those wild hroses and burros.  Watch for news about the next BLM adoption.

Las Vegas—In celebration of our Nation’s Independence, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is holding a special adoption event June 22-24 at Horseman’s Park in Las Vegas. For this event, BLM will provide free delivery within 100 miles of Horseman’s Park for all animals adopted and adopters will be able to adopt a second animal (buddy adoption) for only $25.

Horseman’s Park is located at 5800 E. Flamingo, about one mile east of the Boulder Highway.  The entrance to the Park is adjacent to Jimmy Durante Drive.  Follow the BLM signs to the adoption site.

There will be an excellent selection of about 30 Mustang yearlings, geldings, and mares and 10 burros for qualified adopters through the Adopt-A-Horse or Burro Program. Eight of the animals are being gentled and halter trained by the National Wild Horse Association.   The animals are vaccinated, wormed, healthy and looking for a family. They need someone, possibly you, to give them a good home.

Many of the Mustangs and burros were gathered from the Spring Mountains Complex near Las Vegas, Nevada in January or from other public lands throughout Nevada as a result of overpopulation, drought, and loss of habitat caused by wildfires. The removals ensure the rangelands remain healthy for the remaining wild horses and burros, native wildlife, and permitted livestock.

The animals may be previewed on BLM’s web page at http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en.html prior to the adoption.  The wild Mustangs and burros will be available for viewing from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 22 at Horseman’s Park.

BLM staff will be available to approve adoption applications and answer questions about the animals Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The public also is invited to watch free gentling demonstrations that will be conducted 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

BLM Special Independence Day Wild Horse and Burro Adoption

BLM will open the facility 7 a.m. Saturday morning to provide potential adopters additional time to view the animals and approve applications.  The adoption will be conducted by silent competitive bid Saturday morning only from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., which provides all adopters a chance to adopt the animal of their choice.  Adopters will receive a bidder number once their application is approved, which they must have to participate in the competitive bid portion of the adoption.

The minimum fee for the competitive bid will start at $125 per animal. Animals not selected during the competitive bid will be available for adoption on a first come, first served basis for the remainder of Saturday and 8 a.m. to Noon on Sunday for $125 per animal.

Adoption fees may be paid by cash, check, or credit card.  The fees are used to help defray the cost of gathering and preparing the animals for adoption.

Individuals must be at least 18 years old and have no convictions for inhumane treatment of animals. Adopters also must have adequate facilities, the financial means to care for the animal(s), and should have some experience training or raising a horse or burro. Qualified individuals may adopt up to four animals.

The process is called an "adoption" because BLM retains title to the animal for one year after the adoption.  During this time, adopters cannot sell their adopted animal.  More than 215,000 animals have been placed in private homes since the Adopt-A-Horse or Burro Program began in 1973.
