Government urged to save wild horses
October 14, 2008 (Las Vegas Review-Journal) - Wild horse advocates fear the free-roaming legends of the West might vanish from the ranges within five years if the federal government continues to round them up, as they've done in Red Rock Canyon.  At a news conference Monday, they said they will petition Congress to force several federal agencies to stop most roundups and return horses now in some holding facilities to historic ranges.

GERLACH, Nev. — Five mustangs pounded across the high desert recently, their dark manes and tails giving shape to the wind. Palomino Valley adoption center temporarily closed

palomino-valley-center
As a preventive measure to safeguard the public from potential health risks, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today implemented a temporary closure of the Palomino Valley Center (PVC) regional adoption facility, located 20 miles north of Sparks.

The risks resulted from health problems developed by wild horses recently gathered from the Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area (HMA) in early September. Approximately 1,000 horses were gathered. Many of the animals were very thin, in poor physical condition, and weak due to a lack of forage and water resulting from extended drought conditions. For these reasons the animals are having difficulty adjusting to feed in their new environment.

Video: Channel 8 profiles final round up of wild horses

ch8finalroundup
Tough times lie ahead for Nevada's wild horses. There are already more horses in government pens than exist on the open range.

Now, millions of dollars are being trimmed from the Bureau of Land Management's wild horse budget. This makes it even less likely that the government will put much effort into finding homes for the horses.

Wild horse advocates suspect that the drastic horse roundups Nevada has seen in recent months are related to the news that the BLM budget is being cut, as if someone was trying to grab as many horses as they could while the money was still there.
